Check out this video of Tracy Weinberg performing solo at SWRFA (Southwest Regional Folk Alliance).
Get the jump on new songs from Tracy Weinberg and Friends! These audio files are from recent rehearsals of tunes we added to our repertoire. We have it all - something old (St. James Infirmary), something new (The Side Effects of Love), something borrowed (Private Eye), something blue (Blue Drag). Give a listen!
One of my newest songs, The Side Effects of Love; this one really swings! Gretchen McMahon assists with harmony vocals and has a great guitar solo on the tune. Scott McMahon on bass and Stephen McMahon on dumbek (hand drum) keep it in the groove.
Private Eye is a cool song the band just learned. It's written by my Canadian pal, Ron Beer, who was kind enough to provide the music and lyrics so I could learn it quickly, and also allowed me to add a verse. This song will only get better as we play it at our live performances. Check out Ron's fine music at www.ronbeer.com.
New old music! Blue Drag was written in the 1930s. I heard it performed recently at a club in New Orleans and knew I had to add it to our repertoire. It was a blast arranging this song for the band.
St. James Infirmary dates back to at least 1927, when it was recorded by four different artists. Although it is an undeniably tragic song, it is usually performed with a rhythm and beat to which you can tap your toes. Gretchen has the first solo on guitar, and I take the second on my dojo (resonator banjo).

Tracy Weinberg and Friends, are old-timey and modern all at once, a fresh sound with echoes of blues and swing. Mix in a dash of rock, folk, and country, add a twist of humor, and let them please your musical palette.
Tracy has a unique vocal and rhythmic style on his dobro-banjo. His close musical friend, Gretchen McMahon, adds spice and fire with her powerful guitar work and vocals.
Featuring Tracy's and Gretchen's originals, they also cover classic songs ranging from Summertime to Crying Time, Black Magic Woman to What a Wonderful World. They make a talented team! But Tracy has a lot of friends, so you never know who might join them. Percussion? Vocals? Mandolin? Trumpet? Tracy Weinberg and Friends may remind you of many artists, but they sound like no one but themselves!

Tracy was raised in the Chicago area, where he had the good fortune to hear live music ranging from the Chicago Symphony to Ravi Shankar to Iron Butterfly every summer at Ravinia Park. He picked up the banjo at age 16 because "everyone else played guitar," but his eclectic musical tastes led him to play non-traditional music on it. Tracy truly found his musical voice when he bought a dojo (resonator banjo). His musical influences are wide-ranging, including diverse performers such as Louis Armstrong, Leon Redbone, Tom Waits, and Bela Fleck. Tracy has two albums available; The Other Way Around (2016) and Mountains of Dreams (2012), which charted in the top 30 on the Folk DJ chart. Both co-produced with Tommy Byrd, they feature Warren Hood (mandolin/violin), Stanley Smith clarinet), Chip Dolan (keyboards), and many other talented local musicians.
